Campfires, charcoal, coal, or wood stoves are prohibited outside of developed BLM campgrounds that are posted as open for public use and have existing fire pits or rings made of steel or rock and mortar. To use a campfire in such a campground, you must clear a five-foot area to bare mineral soil, keep it free of overhead flammables, have a functioning round-point shovel at least 35 inches long, and have a responsible adult (18 or older) in attendance with a valid California Campfire Permit. You must fully extinguish all flames and heat in coals before leaving, and fireworks, pyrotechnic devices, tracer or explosive ammunition, and sky lanterns are banned. Internal combustion engines without properly functioning spark arresters are also prohibited. This fire restriction is in effect starting May 1, 2026.
