“Active orders” is how many signed restriction orders we currently hold for a region — not how much of it we watch. Our fail-closed verdict covers the whole region: where no order is on file we say so (and where a land type isn't in our sources, we say the status is unknown), never silence.

What Stage 1 and Stage 2 mean

Stage 1. Campfires typically survive only inside agency-provided fire structures in developed recreation sites. At dispersed sites, wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. Pressurized gas stoves with a shut-off valve are usually exempt.

Stage 2. Wood and charcoal fires are typically prohibited everywhere — including developed campgrounds. A gas stove with a shut-off valve, used in a cleared area, is generally the only legal flame.

Closures. When risk is extreme, agencies close areas to entry entirely. Closures are enforced and carry federal penalties.
